How do I use essential oils?
In my previous post, “What are Essential Oils and What are They Good For” I shared with you the basics of what exactly essential oils are. I sometimes forget, that not everybody knows. They are not just a smelly liquid found in a little bottle. They are therapeutic aromatic volatile compounds found and distilled form certain plants that are sourced around the world where the conditions (weather, soil, altitude, etc.) are optimal for harvest.
I also shared in that blog post many of the ways essential oils can benefit you, from physical, mental, emotional and more. Today, I want to share with you the different ways you can take in, and use this precious plant medicine. Two ways will be pretty common, one way less common, and the 4th way will be a unique technique that I teach to my students in my AcuOil Alchemy Online Course.
I want you to know that when you’re using pure therapeutic grade unadulterated essential oils, from a source like doTERRA committed to never compromise their standards, a little oil goes a long way!
The first way you can use your essential oils is aromatically! Kind of a duh, right? But let me talk to you a little more about how and why you would use them aromatically.
When using oils aromatically, you can diffuse the oils in a diffuser, which typically gives you a consistent flow of the oils, and effects the entire environment that you’re in, which is fantastic! You can also pour the oils into your hands rub them together briskly and breathe those aromatic compounds in deeply! Aaaaaahhhhhh!
Aromatic use supports everything in your respiratory system, but the BEST use of aromatic use is supporting and balancing all things emotions. Did you know your olfactory bulb (your sniffer 😉 takes the molecules up and delivers those beauties straight to the limbic system in your brain which is the center of feeling and emotions?
Topical use of essential oils is best when needing support locally for soothing musculoskeletal discomfort, or skin issues. EO’s can help soothe pain, irritation, redness, itching, minor burns and more. *Be cautious using citrus oils topically as they can be photosensitive with sun exposure.
I also love using oils topically over my belly when I need help with my upset tummy. Lastly, using oils on the bottom of your feet will service your entire body cellularly within a minute!
VERY important to note here: When using essential oils internally, I ONLY recommend using dōTERRA essential oils as I know and trust their sourcing and testing methods… please feel free to reach out if you have any questions about this.
Internal use of oils can support the body from a cellular perspective. When you have something going on from your throat to the bottom of the urogenital tract, your essential oils can be a great aide for you.
I love putting oils like Frankincense under my tongue daily, citrus oils like lemon in my water, the dōTERRA blend digestZen in a tea to support tummy distress.
Now I want to share with you, just a bit, on the concept of using essential oils on acupuncture points to optimize and individualize your oil protocol and choices. This is a technique I have learned over many years of study, with many teachers, but specifically Peter Holmes. We dive deeply into the function of specific acupuncture points and oils to support those points in my AcuOil Alchemy Online program.
Here is the idea though, you can think about this as needless acupuncture. Acupuncture points are (for the most part) places where qi (life energy) accumulate on specific acupuncture meridians or channels in our body. The 12 primary meridians cross through and relate to specific organ systems in our body. For example, we have lung and large intestine, liver and gallbladder, stomach and spleen, heart and pericardium meridians.
Along each of these meridians, there are dozens of points where when paired with the right essential oil can create incredible harmony and balance in the body.

I can geek out on this all day, but I will leave it with that. If you want to learn more, check out my AcuOil Alchemy Online Course here and know that I will be sharing a ton of free content to get you started with oils on points.
I would love to hear from you! What is your favorite way to use essential oils?
